Garage door crimes

garage door break inYour garage is the largest feature of the exterior of your home. It can also be the easiest place for a criminal to break in. Making sure that your garage door is in good physical condition is the first thing you should be thinking about. Here are a few tips on making it resistant to crime.

Without a doubt, a door that won’t close is your biggest problem. Often all you have to do in this case is make sure the remote is working properly. In a worst case scenario, you might have to reprogram it.

Another thing to think about is a vulnerability related to the safety mechanism. All doors come with a release handle that is put there for user safety reasons. Sometimes this mechanism can be tripped by from the outside with a coat hanger or similar device. This is particularly problematic if you have windows on your door. You can completely remove the handle, but that doesn’t eliminate your problem. What you can do is leave the pull handle and bind the release mechanism with a zip tie. If you really need to use it, pulling down hard will break the zip tie. Thieves will not have enough leverage to do it from the outside.
